What Lives Within Us, All at Once

This series began during a period when the way I saw my own life was shifting. When my son was born, questions about identity, memory, closeness, and change became suddenly concrete. I began to see my own childhood differently, to think more about my mother, and to consider what we absorb from other people and carry forward.

I’m also interested in what sets us in motion in the first place. Sometimes it’s an event, sometimes a feeling, sometimes the people around us. We start to see our own choices differently, question other people’s motives, and understand things much later because our own perspective has changed. Not every change begins with a conscious decision. Often, only in hindsight do we realize that something in us had already shifted.

That movement runs through the paintings as well. Lines change direction, forms circle, layers overlap, traces appear and disappear. Nothing stays entirely in its original state. To me, this reflects the way experience keeps working within us and changes how we see ourselves and other people.

The works do not tell a finished story or follow a straight path. They move through different states: an almost unnoticed beginning, a sudden transition, exhaustion and loss of self, the slow return of a sense of self, loss and memory, and finally, the question of what it means to be alongside another person as they become themselves.

Motherhood is the lived experience these works grew from, but the questions within them reach far beyond it. They are about transitions—moments when something familiar no longer quite holds and something new has already begun.
