The Shape of Missing
Since my son was born, my mother’s absence has felt different. I miss her not only as my mother. I also feel the relationship that might have existed between her and my son—two people who never had the chance to know each other.
In the painting, memories sit beneath pale layers. Some remain clear, while others surface only briefly. The fine red trace stays visible. For me, it connects my mother, my son, and me.
The Shape of Missing is a work about loss, but not only about emptiness. I’m interested in how a relationship can continue to live within us even when the person is no longer here.
