Most paintings in this series began with a personal experience, an inner state, or a question. That never meant I knew what the finished painting would look like. With Intertwined, I decided for the first time to let go of even that starting point.
I began painting without trying to express a particular idea. I let the colors guide me, responded to what was emerging on the canvas, painted over passages, left traces visible, and made decisions in the moment.
Only afterward did I begin to wonder why these particular movements and connections had emerged. I didn't find a clear answer. But looking at the painting brought me back to something that also interests me in the other works: how many different experiences and influences can be at work within us at the same time, even when we can't trace where they came from.
What comes from within us, what have we taken on from others, and what emerges only through their interaction?
What interests me most about Intertwined is that I hadn't asked these questions before I began. This time, the painting came first, and the questions followed.
